How is Dussehra Celebrated in Hyderabad?

Celebrated with great excitement and enthusiasm throughout India, Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu festival. Dussehra is celebrated with a unique combination of traditional and modern festivities in Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana.

Bathukamma: A Floral Tribute to the Goddess

The Bathukamma festival is one of the most interesting parts of Hyderabad’s Dussehra celebrations. The Telangana folk festival known as Bathukamma is mostly celebrated by women. Women get together to make develop floral arrangements known as Bathukammas over the nine days of Navratri.

These Bathukammas are decorated with kumkum, turmeric, and other holy objects. They are made from a variety of flowers. The Bathukammas immerse themselves in Hussain Sagar Lake and other bodies of water on the last day of Navratri. The immersion ceremony is a festive event with drumming, dancing, and singing.

Durga Puja: A Celebration of Divine Power

Durga Puja is another important aspect of Dussehra celebrations in Hyderabad. The city is home to a number of Durga temples, and during Navratri, these temples are adorned with colorful decorations. Devotees throng to the temples to offer prayers and seek blessings from the Goddess Durga. On the final day of Navratri, Durga idols are immersed in water bodies, marking the end of the festival.

Ramlila: A Dramatic Retelling of the Ramayana

The popular theatrical rendition of the epic Ramayana, which tells the story of Rama’s victory over Ravana, is called Ramlila. Ramilla performances are held throughout Hyderabad in different locations and attract sizable audiences. The effigies of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhakarna are burned at the end of the performances, which are usually spread over several days.

Festivities and Celebrations

Hyderabad celebrates Dussehra with parties and celebrations in addition to these religious and cultural events. People are busy shopping for jewellery, sweets, and new clothes in the city’s markets. Grand feasts are shared by families and friends, and laughter and music fill the air.

A Unique Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Hyderabad’s Dussehra celebrations feature a distinctive fusion of modern and traditional elements.
