Walter Mair Explains his Writing Process
Although there was a short timeline for creating the soundtrack for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, composer Walter Mair managed to make the most of it. Mair claimed in an interview with GameSpot that his limited time to write the soundtrack actually encouraged him to be more imaginative. The creators encouraged him to try out other sounds and textures, and he was able to do so.
“The time crunch was actually a blessing in disguise,” Mair said. “It forced me to be more creative and to not overthink things.”
The basic concept and setting of the game, which takes place in a near-future world where Russia has taken over the United States, reportedly served as inspiration for Mair. His goal was to write a soundtrack that was powerful and strong at the same time. “I wanted the music to reflect the chaos and destruction of the game,” Mair said. “But I also wanted it to be emotional and to capture the human cost of war.”
Because of the great deal of customization in how the game’s soundtrack was delivered, Mair was able to craft a really realistic experience. He began by crafting a wide range of what is basically an intense action tune with lots of dynamics. This gave him the opportunity to compose slower-paced songs for each mission that were in the same key and tempo so that they could be spliced from one to the other, as well as quieter sections inside the action piece.
Adjusting to the Speed of Modern Warfare
“I think the music is an important part of any video game,” Mair said. “It can help to set the tone and mood of the game, and it can also help to create a sense of place.”
Mair fails to score in the game’s zombie mode. Treyarch was the composer of that score. On November 8, 2011, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was made available. The game sold over 25 million copies worldwide and was a critical and financial hit. The game’s soundtrack received many award nominations, including one for Best Original Music (BAFTA).
Mair is an experienced composer for video games. Several well-known video games, such as the God of War, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor series, have been composed by him. His use of electronic and symphonic music is well known. His musical works are frequently commended for being able to convey strong feelings and a feeling of atmosphere. After attending Berklee College of Music, Mair graduated. He stays in California’s Los Angeles.
