In Nassau, Bahamas, tragedy struck on December 5, 2023, as a 44-year-old woman from Boston fell victim to a fatal shark attack while paddleboarding near a luxurious resort.
The woman’s identity remains undisclosed as authorities work to notify her next of kin. She had been paddleboarding roughly three-quarters of a mile off the coast of New Providence Island when the attack occurred. Witnesses described a sudden assault by what is believed to have been either a tiger or bull shark, species known to inhabit Bahamian waters.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing incident. One beachgoer, visibly shaken, expressed how the serene scene quickly turned chaotic. “It happened so fast. One minute she was just paddling along, and the next, there was this commotion in the water. We could hear her screams, and then… silence.”
Responding swiftly to distress calls, a lifeguard from Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort rushed to the scene by boat. He managed to bring the woman and her paddleboard ashore. Despite immediate medical aid, including CPR, the victim succumbed to severe injuries, primarily to her upper right side.
